Sleep Apnea Clinical Trials in Canada

Clinical Research Trials

MedSleep is a leader in conducting research and clinical trials with the goal of advancing the treatment options in sleep medicine.

Our clinical trials are conducted in compliance with International Conference on Harmonisation (ICH)-Good Clinical Practice (GCP), regulatory guidance and standard operating procedures.

Our highly skilled staff includes clinical research coordinators, a patient recruitment specialist and board registered polysomnographic technologists.

In addition, we have a full-time medical director/principal investigator and more than 20 consulting physicians with specialties in sleep medicine, psychiatry, psychology, neurology, respirology and internal medicine.

Do You Qualify?

You may qualify to participate in any of our clinical research studies if you meet the study criteria. 

Sleep Disorders Patient Registry - Stanford Center for Sleep Sciences and Medicine

This study will use sleep clinic data and collect biological samples for a de-identified research repository (sleep registry) in collaboration with the Stanford Center for Sleep Sciences and Medicine.

The goal of this study is to systematically gather blood samples from participants with sleep disorders to study genetic factors and serum biomarkers in relation to each sleep disorder and its severity, with the aim of better identifying subgroups of patients who may have a differential evolution or treatment response.

To qualify for this study, participants must:

  • be 18 years or older and 
  • have a consult appointment scheduled at the Toronto Sleep Institute seeking a diagnosis of a 
  • sleep disorder such as obstructive, or receiving follow up care for an identified sleep except for sleep related breathing disturbances. 
  • Subjects must be able to read and understand English.

Investigational Sleep Device for Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Have obstructive sleep apnea? Have difficulty adhering to CPAP?

We are currently seeking volunteers who may be interested in participating in a clinical trial, involving an investigational device (a device that is currently being tested) on patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).

Continuous negative external pressure (cNEP) is a novel approach to the treatment of OSA. The purpose of this study is to obtain evidence that the collar is safe and effective in patients who cannot use CPAP.

Participation in this trial will last approximately 6 weeks and require 7 visits.

To qualify you must:

  • Are 18 years or older
  • Have had an in-lab sleep study done in the past year
  • Have obstructive sleep apnea
  • Had difficulty in using/adhering to CPAP
  • Have no prior neck surgeries or radiation to the neck
  • Have no known heart diseases
  • Not allergic to silicone based materials or surgical adhesives
  • Are not pregnant
  • Not be a shift or night time worker
  • Must not have any psychiatric illness that is not reasonably controlled with regular treatment
  • Would be able to do 2 sleep studies

Qualified participants would receive:

  • The investigational device
  • Medical care
  • Compensation for you time

Narcolepsy

HAVE YOU BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH NARCOLEPSY? DO YOU SUFFER FROM EXCESSIVE SLEEPINESS?

We are currently seeking volunteers who may be interested in participating in a clinical trial involving an investigational medication (a medication that is being tested) that has been shown  to reduce excessive daytime sleepiness.

To qualify, you must:

  • Be 18-70 years old
  • Sleep usually during the night for at least 6 hours
  • Not have the usual bedtime later than 1.00 AM
  • Not be a shift or nighttime worker
  • Not be pregnant, nursing or lactating
  • Not consume excessive amounts of caffeine
  • Not have a history of substance use
  • Not have a weight loss surgery within the last year
  • Not have moderate or severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea
  • Not have significant cardiovascular disease like heart attack, uncontrolled hypertension, angina
  • Not have participated in a clinical trial in the last 30 days
  • Be able to attend 6 clinic visits over 14 weeks

Qualified participants will receive:

  • The investigational medication
  • Medical care
  • Compensation for your time and travel

Obstructive Sleep Apnea / Weight Loss:

Are you overweight or obese and suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)?

It has been shown that weight loss can have a beneficial effect on the severity of your OSA and your overall health. We are seeking volunteers for a clinical study involving a novel treatment that has been shown to cause weight loss in overweight and obese people.

To qualify, you must:

  • Be 18-64 years of age
  • Be overweight or obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m²)
  • Have severe or moderate OSA
  • Not have type 1 or type 2 diabetes
  • Not be able to use or do not want to use Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) treatment
  • Be able to attend 13 visits over a period of 36 weeks (8 months)

Qualified Participants will receive:

  • The investigational medication
  • Medical care
  • Diet and exercise counseling
  • Pedometer
  • Compensation for your time and travel will also be provided

Chronic Primary Insomnia (in elderly population):

You have difficulty falling asleep and maintaining sleep.

To qualify, you must:

  • You are male or female and 65 years of age or older
  • Have problems falling and staying asleep for more than one month
  • Do not regularly nap throughout the day
  • Have no significant medical illness, mental illness or cognitive impairment

Long Term Study on Chronic Primary Insomnia (in adult and elderly patients)

You have difficulty falling asleep and maintaining sleep.

 To qualify, you must:
 

  • You are male or female, at least 18 years of age and older
  • Have problems falling and staying asleep for more than one month
  • Have no significant physical and mental illness or cognitive impairment

Primary Snoring:

You have noisy breathing during sleep.

 To qualify, you must:

  • You are male or female and 18 years of age or older
  • Have a previously completed sleep study with documented moderate to severe snoring
  • Do not have severe sleep apnea (i.e., cessation or pauses of breathing while sleeping)
  • Have no significant medical illness, mental illness

If you qualify for any of these clinical studies you may receive the following:
 

  • Complete sleep and/or medical evaluation (including routine blood tests and comprehensive physical examination)
  • Study medication and all study-related tests at no cost
  • Compensation may be provided for your time and/or travel
